Vitamin D, sometimes called “the sunshine vitamin”, is produced in the skin in response to sunlight. It is a fat soluble vitamin that is accompanied by a bevy of benefits including facilitating the immune system, promoting healthy neuro-muscular functions, regulating the absorption of calcium, promoting strong bones and teeth, and increasing resistance to certain diseases such as osteoporosis, osteomalacia, heart disease, and even certain forms of cancer.
Vitamin D has also been proven to increase serotonin [the mood neurotransmitter] levels in the brain. Hence it’s other nickname… “the happy pill”. Fall may mean less sun exposure which can be great for our skin, but detrimental to our mood. In fact, vitamin D and light therapy are often recommended to combat Seasonal Affective Disorder, aka SAD. If you are feeling a little low with the change in season make sure you are getting an adequate amount of vitamin D.
Our bodies naturally produce vitamin D through exposure to sunlight. Just 10 minutes a day should supply a sufficient amount of this vitamin. Not everyone is lucky enough to live in a place where they can see the sun shine everyday. Not to fear. Many foods contain vitamin D including salmon, eggs, milk, yogurt, and even fortified orange juice.
Alternatively, you can introduce a vitamin D supplement into your health regimen if you feel you are lacking. 600 IU [international units] is the standard dosing recommendation according to the Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences. People over the age of 50 may choose to increase their dose to 800 in order to maintain strong and healthy bones.
All in all, good old fashioned sun light is a wonderful way to get your daily dose of D. If you are looking for a triple threat, sunshine + foods high in vitamin D + taking a vitamin D supplement should ensure that you are meeting your body’s needs.

Fall may be in the air… but that doesn’t mean skipping the SPF. Most premature aging is caused by the sun and daily use of sunscreen is your best defense in minimizing skin damage. Remember our recent post about UVA and UVB rays? UVA rays are always present even on cold, cloudy days. They also have the ability to penetrate more deeply, so don’t fool yourself into thinking your safe just because the sun isn’t shining.
SkinMedica’s Daily Physical Defense SPF 30+ is unlike other sunscreens that use chemical agents as a form of protection. These chemicals seep into the skin and absorb the sun’s rays. Daily Physical Defense is a mineral sunscreen that sits on top of the skin and rather than absorbing these harmful rays, it reflects them.
This sunscreen utilizes Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide. These minerals are skin friendly and provide impeccable, broad spectrum UVA and UVB protection. Green tea leaf extract and caffeine team up to provide powerful antioxidant protection. The high concentration of antioxidants and polyphenols help prevent damage caused by free radicals.
Apply this product daily to the face, neck, and decollate. It’s sheer, oil free formula makes it perfect for every day use. Apply after all other products in your skin care regimen and before applying your makeup.
Doctors recommend this sunscreen for all skin types including those with sensitive skin, patients that have experienced allergic reactions to other types of sunscreens, those who are acne prone, and even those who have had a recent peel or aesthetic procedure because this product is so gentle in nature.
Daily Physical Defense SPF 30 + is also recommended by the Skin Cancer Foundation. In fact, a portion of all proceeds go to further skin cancer education and awareness.
Is your skin stressed, dull looking, and just a little tired? Over time dirt, oil, and impurities can build up on our skin making it look and feel a little less than perfect. Enter… SkinMedica’s Rejuvenative Toner. This amazing product helps to remove said dirt, oil, and impurities along with dead skin cells that build up along the skin’s surface.
What makes this toner so amazing? It contains key ingredients that pack a powerful punch including alpha-hydroxy-acid (AHA) which improves skin tone and texture while reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Willow bark extract provides mild exfoliation while green tea leaf extract fights free radicals. Witch hazel acts as an antioxidant and helps to reduce the appearance of pores.
Apply SkinMedica’s Rejuvenative Toner to the face twice a day after cleansing and before moisturizing and applying additional products. For more information on this product please check out SkinMedica’s official site.
Mmmmmm… SUGAR! It seems to make life so sweet… or does it? We all know that though sugar may taste delicious, it can have a negative impact on our health. Sugar can increase cholesterol, contribute to diabetes, weaken eyesight, cause cardiovascular disease, contribute to osteoporosis, interfere with protein absorption, and fuel the growth of cancer, but did you know that it can also wreak havoc on your skin? When simple sugar molecules such as glucose, or fructose attach to fats and proteins rogue molecules begin to form. This process is known as glycation. Glycation causes the onset of wrinkles, can make your skin brittle and inflamed, and destroys both collagen and elastin.
Howcan you have your cake and eat it too? There is no need to cut out sugar completely. Sugar naturally occurs in many healthy foods such as fruit. There are also healthy and natural substitutes such as stevia. Honey and agave are other great substitutes as they have a lower glycemic index than sugar. Just remember to steer clear of those nasty chemical substitutes. They don’t come without a price and are accompanied by a whole new slew of health problems.
Another way to fight the glycation process is by upping your intake of antioxidants. Filling up on green tea, berries, and spinach are good ways to keep the nasty side effects of sugar at bay and help protect your skin.
If the eyes are the windows to the soul… how old is yours? It’s no secret that the first signs of aging are so often seen around the eyes. The skin around the eyes is extremely thin and delicate. It becomes even thinner and less plump as we age due to a loss of subcutaneous fat tissue and collagen. As it is in so many cases, the best medicine is prevention… proper nutrition, a healthy lifestyle, and giving that area a little extra TLC, however, sometimes there is just no fighting the hands of time, or a pesky little thing called gravity.
There are a number of very effective treatments for the eye area, depending on your particular concern and the extent of the problem.
If dryness, dark circles, and thinning of the skin around the eyes is your main concern, regular use of an eye cream may prove beneficial. We loveSkinMedica’s TNS Eye Repair. It contains growth factors that help to hydrate the skin and increase firmness. It also helps reduce the appearance of dark cirles. It’s no wonder it was voted the best luxury eye cream by ABC News in 2012.
Are crow’s feet your issue? Botox may be a nice option for you. Botox can minimize the muscle contractions that cause the skin around the eyes to bunch up and thus crow’s feet to form. Botox is a wonderful preventive measure that you can take in the fight against wrinkles and expression lines around the eyes and elsewhere. Want to brush up on your Botox knowledge? Check out our previous post on the benefits of Botox.
If droopiness, puffiness, loose or sagging skin around the eye area is your issue an eyelid lift, or blepharoplasty, may be something to consider. An upper blepharoplasty (upper lids only), lower blepharoplasty (lower lids only), or quad blepharoplasty (both upper and lower lids) are wonderful options depending on the area of concern. Visit our website to see incredible pre and post-procedure photos. To learn more abut this procedure please visit the American Society of Plastic Surgeons’ website. This contains up to date, accurate, and reliable information.
Many of you have probably heard of Arnica Montana, in fact, it is one of the most popular homeopathic remedies throughout the world… but what exactly is it? Arnica Montana is a perennial that grows throughout northern and central Europe as well as Siberia. It is more commonly known as the mountain daisy. St. Hildergard, a 12th century nun, once wrote about the healing properties of this little plant. It has been growing in popularity since the 16th century. Arnica can now be found in almost every health food store as well as many people’s medicine cabinets.
Why is Arnica so popular? It is a natural pain reliever, soothes aches and pains such as sore muscles, relieves stiffness, and reduces bruising. Arnica can be taken internally or used as an ointment. Though Arnica is toxic at full strength, it is completely safe when diluted homeopathically. We recommend Arnica Montana to our patients to relieve post-procedure pain, bruising, and swelling. In fact, Arnica can be taken before elective procedures and injections as a preventive measure.

Summer heat can bring on a variety of skin problems including dry skin, acne from an increase in oil production, and worsened rosacea from excessive heat. One of the keys to keeping your skin healthy is letting it breathe. Unfortunately, the makeup we use to cover up, even out, and make our skin look flawless can contribute to these conditions by causing a barrier, thus trapping sweat, dirt, and oil beneath our skin.
Luckily, you needn’t sacrifice beautiful looking skin for truly healthy skin. Oxygenetix is a full coverage, non-comedogenic, oil free, hypoallergenic, organic, and truly breathable foundation. Not only does Oxygenetix allow your skin to breathe, it actually drives oxygen into your skin’s cells using a breakthrough oxygen complex known as Ceravitae. Ceravitae is infused with oxygen, meaning it proliferates collagen production in the skin.
This foundation was formulated by doctors for post-procedural care. This product is actually beneficial to both patients recovering from cosmetic surgery and burn victims. It has been shown to speed up recovery time and minimize scaring. If you are looking for a foundation with unparalleled benefits, Oxygenetix may be the perfect fit.
